2020 DUTCHESS COUNTY CYO

ART SHOW AND CONTEST

We invite all youth of the Vicariate of Dutchess to participate in the Annual CYO Art Show and Contest by entering original artwork he/she have created in school, a club, religious education class, or at home since September 2019.

Art will be judged in the following age divisions:

LEARNERS Fifth & Sixth
MASTERS Seventh & Eighth
EXPERTS Ninth & Tenth
ELITES Eleventh & Twelfth

NOTE: Only flat artwork pieces will be judged and sent to the Archdiocesan Contest. No mosaics, stencils, computer generated or number pieces will be accepted.

 

CRITERIA FOR ART WORK

Size of art pieces is not to exceed 18 x 25 inches including the matting. Please DO NOT submit work with frames and glass. These pieces will not be judged and we cannot be responsible for any breakage.

 

WORK MUST BE MATTED. Professional matting is not required.

 

All entries must be identified by a typewritten label, giving the following information: artist name, age division, title of work, and name of school or parish. This information must be affixed on the reverse side of the art piece.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

All entries will be judged as follows:

                  Originality of theme                                       25%
Design 25%
Execution 25%
Presentation  25%

 

Our judges are independent artists and include some who are teachers of children. All generously volunteer their time for the Art Show.

 

AWARDS & ARCHDIOCESAN CONTEST

 

Awards will be given to First, Second, and Third place winners in each age group division and category (i.e. Small Fry Division, Acrylics Category-first, second, & third place; Small Fry Division, Charcoal Category-first, second, third place, etc.).

A Best of Show will be awarded for each division (i.e. Small Fry Division, Beginner Division, Learners Division, etc.).

The Best of Show County pieces are eligible to be entered into the Archdiocesan Contest. The Archdiocesan Art & Essay Show will be held on  May 15, 2020 at 1011 First Avenue, New York, New York. Best of Show winners and their families are welcomed to attend this event.

The Dutchess County CYO Student Artist of the Year will be chosen from the Best of Show winners. This student will be honored at the Catholic Charities Community Services Dinner in June 2020.

 

ENTRY FEES

 

The entry fee is $2.00 per entry. All fees must be submitted prior to the Art Show and Contest. Please make checks payable to Catholic Charities Community Services of Dutchess County (CCCS-DC). Also place CYO Art Show fee in the memo of the check.

CYO ESSAY CONTEST

 

The approach that we will take for this year's Essay Contest will differ from previous years, yet will enhance the process and support our youth in their pursuit of higher education as a vital step in the college admissions process. The selected questions are the most commonly used questions for college admissions applications. These questions were developed through lengthy research via The Princeton Review. By using no more than 650 words participants should respond to one of the following prompts:

Essay Contest

As in previous years the Essay contest provides a variety of selections for each participant to select a topic that will allow them the best opportunity for expression of written word. By using no more than 650 words participants should respond to one of the following prompts: The questions below were selected by the CYO Archdiocesan administrative staff after a thorough review of possible essay questions for this years contest.

 

CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
  • Discuss a special attribute or accomplishment that sets you apart.

  • Is there a teacher or parish leader that demonstrates the qualities of the CYO Mission statement of, "develops values and strength of character in tomorrow's leaders..."? Please tell us about this teacher or parish leader and how he/she has made you a better leader.
  • Discuss how your faith has helped you through a challenging time in your life?

 

Essay Contest Eligibility & Guidelines:

The Contest is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.

Essay is limited to 650 words and must be type written. Essays will be judged on content as it pertains to the topic, spelling, and grammar.

A 3 x 5 inch index card with the author’s name, Parent/Guardian e-mail address, address, telephone number, grade, county and name of school or parish must be affixed to the essay.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be judged on the Archdiocesan level. Winners of the Archdiocesan Contest will be personally invited to attend the Archdiocesan Art & Essay Awards Ceremony that will be held on May 15, 2020.

We invite youth of the Vicariate of Dutchess County in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th to participate in its Annual Essay Contest.

AWARDS

These winners will also be judged on the Archdiocesan level. Winners of the Archdiocesan Contest will be personally invited to attend the Archdiocesan Art & Essay Awards Ceremony being held May 15, 2020 at 1011 First Avenue, New York, New York.

ESSAY SUBMISSION

Please submit all essays to the attention of Jill Philipbar at Catholic Charities Community Services, 218 Church Street, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601. All entries should be submitted by April 24, 2020.
